Cancun Beaches and the Riviera Maya. Travel Guide to discover some tourist sites to visit, such as Xcaret park, mayan pyramids and a lot more. Cancun Beaches and the Riviera Maya are located in Mexico, in the Yucatan Peninsula. In December 2016, I traveled with my family to Cancun where we stayed for 10 days. I was very excited and eager to anticipate the days before the trip. Especially since I had a lot of desire to know the pyramids of Chichen Itza. Also the beautiful Xcaret Park, which is one of the best known in the area.
Finally the big day arrived, it was very exciting when the plane landed at the airport. The first thing we did was to take a bus to go to the hotel. I recommend not taking taxis since they are quite expensive.
The city of Cancun
The hotel zone has exclusive places where elegance and charm are characteristic of its constructions. Therefore, you could have a pleasant stay in its luxurious hotels and resorts.
Our hotel was located in Dolphin beaches one of the most beautiful in Cancun. Also in this area is the Nichupte Lagoon, which we could see from our room.
In downtown Cancun, there are many hotels and public beaches. There are also some luxurious shopping malls and great nightclubs, including Coco Bongo. By the way, this place has an awesome atmosphere of fiesta.
The main attraction of Coco Bongo is the night show, where you can learn about the Mexican culture. I loved the spectacle of the mariachis group. However, there were not enough chairs for anybody what it was a bit disappointing.
After having enjoyed the city we were on the beach, which makes Cancun an unforgettable paradise. Its richness and natural beauty is incomparable, with white sand beaches and beautiful crystalline waters with turquoise blue tones. Cancun also has a great biodiversity of flora and fauna.
On the beach, you can find people who sell touristic packages to different places in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. For instance, Xcaret park, Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba, Playa del Carmen, etc.
You can discover different public beaches, like Del Niño, las Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas, Caracol, Chac mool, Marlín, Ballenas, Nizuc and beach Dolphins. This last beach has a viewpoint and the popular sign of Cancun. This viewpoint is a very appropriate place to take excellent photos.
This island is located in front of Cancun, you have to take a catamaran from one of the ports. During the tour we stopped to practice Snuba in the middle of the sea. In Isla mujeres you will find the North Beach. This beach crosses the second largest reef in the world. In addition, it is one of the most beautiful in the Mexican Caribbean, for its waters with green tones.
Cancun scenic tower
It is a spectacular viewpoint, since it is a tower that rises to 80 meters of height. In the upper part, it starts to turn slowly to be able to observe completely the whole view. After 15 minutes, it start to go down slowly to appreciate the landscape; no doubts it is a nice attraction.
We can find among the archaelogical sites: the Meco, Yamil Lu’um and the king. We only had the chance to visit the king, it was a few blocks from the hotel. It is an area with several very beautiful Mayan constructions. Iguanas of all sizes abound in that place and throughout Cancun and the Mayan Riviera.
It is great to buy all kinds of Mexican and Mayan handicrafts, their prices are very comfortable. It is a huge place, which has lots of variety in articles and everything is very nice.
Kabah, Mayan Museum of Cancun, Coco Bongo, Dolphin Beach, Ka Yok Planetarium, Puerto Morelos, Holbox, MUSA and Xoximilco.
During our stay in Cancun, we also visit the Riviera Maya, which is located 1 hour from Cancun. Many of its attractions have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. For instance, the temple of Kukulkan in Chichen Itza.
The paradisiacal beaches of white sand and crystalline turquoise waters are a unique natural beauty. Also the underground rivers and cenotes, ideal for swimming and scuba diving. We were able to visit many cenotes and swim in them, some open sky and others inside caves. These are a natural wonder because they are grottoes that were filled with water as time passed. They are very deep and the water is a little cold. In the same way there are also so popular aquatic parks like Xcaret park.
You can also visit the tropical rainforest, which preserves abundant flora and fauna. Among the typical fauna of the region, there are some Mexican birds like grackles or mammals like badger. In the same way, you can observe majestic Mayan constructions, unique in the world, like the pyramids of Chichen Itza.
Tourist sites of the Riviera Maya
Chichen Itza pyramids
This place, with beautiful pyramids, is located in Yucatan. Among them, the Temple of Kukulcan, was recognized as one of the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World in 2007. And also as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. It’s a majestic construction, we wanted to climb, but it’s not allowed.
Something fascinating next to this pyramid is that you listen the song of a bird Quetzal, when someone claps. Due to the great echo of Chichen Itza, when someone also shouts out you can hear the sounds of a ball bounding.
There is also a sacred cenote and an astronomical observatory on this site, in which you can see beautiful sunsets and stars. Definitely, the whole site of Chichen Itza has a great splendor and a magical beauty.
It is a natural and aquatic park, has many activities and beautiful landscapes. Among them, we find ecological walks, swimming with dolphins and cat sharks, diving, snorkeling, Snuba, sea trek. It also has beautiful underground rivers. You can cross the rivers by swimming in caves with approximately a length of 600 meters. There is no doubt that they are a great natural beauty.
I loved Xcaret Park for its organization, cleanliness and beauty; besides, it’s a park so big. So you can not get to visit in a single day, minimum you have to go twice. The delicious lunch is included in an unlimited buffet. Especially, I recommend the typical food of Yucatan called cochinita pibil. In Xcaret park, you can also see a horse and night show with typical music. Xcaret park is definitely a place you can not miss.
It has beautiful beaches and majestic constructions of the ancient Mayan city. Here I recommend you to try the coconut ice creams, so delicious.
It is a very nice water park, it looks like an immense natural aquarium because it is ideal to observe different marine species.
I loved it because it has a great pyramid, which is allowed to climb. They put a rope to be able to go up and down because of its strong steep. From its summit you can see a view of the whole forest.
Playa del Carmen
It is one of the most important tourist sites of the Riviera Maya since its beautiful beaches. Fifth Avenue, a place surrounded by luxury stores ideal for shopping. The night life has a wonderful and cozy atmosphere. It is an exclusive area of great attractiveness and elegance. They also sell delicious churros, which are typical of the country.
Cenotes, Valladolid, Mayan community, Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, Secret River, Xplor, Aktún Chen, Xenses and Cozumel.

Remember to bring enough sunscreen and repellent to the jungle areas, Xcaret park, Chichen Itza, among others. It must be remembered that they must be natural and biodegradable so as not to affect or damage the bodies of water, flora and fauna.
Both in Cancun and the Riviera Maya you can pay in Mexican pesos or in American dollars.
Keep in mind at all times the care of the environment you are visiting. It is essential not to throw garbage, not pollute the bodies of water and not to abuse the species. This Mexico paradise must be preserved for its incalculable natural beauty and as a marvel of creation.
