The Amazon rainforest or Amazonia, one of the new seven natural wonders known as the lung of the planet. It extends for a few million square kilometers through 9 countries in South America. In this article you can read about things to do in this place, like sailing on the Amazon River, visiting indigenous communities, do ecotourism etc.
It’s a unique ecosystem in biodiversity, which is inhabited by thousands of animal and vegetation species. It is a green paradise; very difficult to imagine in our modern society. Its source of life, the Amazon River is the largest and longest in the world crossing three countries; Peru, Colombia, and Brazil.
The landscape makes fly the imagination of people who have been there. So, we can talk about a great scenario for any adventure of magical realism. Indeed, we can see similarities between Macondo and the towns in the rainforest. At the same way, it is a Garden of Eden analogy because of the unspoiled nature.
Colombian amazon rainforest
The adventure in the Colombian amazon rainforest begins in the port of Leticia, the southernmost city of the country. It borders Tabatinga (Brazil) and Santa Rosa de Yavari (Peru). You should travel either by boat along the Amazon River or plane at the El Dorado airport in Bogota. In Leticia you can visit Santander Park being usual the noise produced by hundreds of parrots after 5:30 pm. They seek shelter to sleep and protection from the dangers of the jungle.
Tourism in Colombian Amazon -Things to do
Below, the main things to do in the Colombian amazon rainforest.
Puerto Nariño and surroundings
If we go deeper into the jungle, about 80 kilometers away we find the municipality of Puerto Nariño. A place without any car that stands out because of the facades of wooden houses. There, you will enjoy an amazing view of the jungle from the viewpoint at 12 meters high. This is no doubt a relaxing experience to empty your mind, glimpsing the trees and watercourses.
Near Puerto Nariño we can find Lake Tarapoto, a nice spot for the sighting of gray and pink dolphins. Exceptional animals that are threatened by the destruction of the basin due to human activity.
Additionally, you can see other kinds of animals such as birds, fishes or reptiles; and practice water sports such as kayaking or fishing.
If instead, you are looking for a cultural plan, we recommend you the San Francisco de Loretoyaco Institute where you will learn about mythology and have the opportunity to plant trees; the Natutama center if you want to know about the aquatic ecosystem and see a simulation of the Amazon River underwater; or the Yai Pata Uinchi ethnographic museum “the sacred elements of the house” to discover the customs of the region.
If your interest is to do ecotourism, you are in the perfect area due to the variety of places. For instance, in the reserve of Tanimboca, you can hike through swamps with different kinds of flowers and medicinal plants. As well as appreciate some species of snakes and the great black caiman.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to do some adventure sports such as climbing, rappel, canopy, etc.
At the Cahuinari National Park, be surprised with the height of the trees, and exotic animals such as jaguars, tigrillos or anacondas. Likewise, at the natural reserve of Aguas Claras, walk along the ecological trails with the guides who will instruct you about the different birds on the way. Monkey Island, you can interact directly with the monkeys by feeding them and taking a lot of pictures. At the ecological park Amazon world, you will be aware of environment care while observing the endemic and fruit plants.
Apart from these activities, you can take guided hikes (2-3 hours) through the Colombian Amazon Rainforest during the day or night. However, you can go completely into the jungle for a few days (depending on the agreement you reach with the native guides). This is a unique experience in which you need to survive on your own; pretty much like a Hollywood adventure movie (if you decide to do it, you are a bit insane, lol).
Now, if you would like to interact with the ethnic groups of this region such as Cocamas, Yaguas or Ticunas. You could visit some indigenous communities such as Hitoma, Tarapoto or Macedonia. There, you could learn a few native language words. Furthermore, buy natural medications and get some souvenirs such as handmade crafts and accessories.
Peru and Brazil
If you want to leave Colombia, you can visit the Peruvian and Brazilian Amazon that are easily accessible to tourists. Things to do in these countries: in Peru, the islands of San Antonio de Cacao and Santa Rosa de Yavari can only be reached by boat; there you will learn about the Peruvian flora and fauna. In Brazil, the town of Tabatinga looks smaller, more expensive and poorer than Leticia. Instead of being disappointed, try to take advantage of the opportunity to practice Portuguese and to buy souvenirs from Brazil.
Not only is about things to do, but also food to eat.
- Pirarucu: It is a giant fish of the Amazon River, so delicious and with multiple ways of preparation.
- Copoazu: It is a large fruit extracted from a tree related to cocoa. The flavor of its juice is similar to passion fruit but sweeter.
- Farina: It is a cereal that is mixed with grated and ripe cassava.
- Casabe: It is an arepa from cassava; it is usually accompanied with fish or meat.
- Mojojoy: It is a white worm about four centimeters long that is eaten alive in the indigenous communities.
- Gamitana: It is another giant fish that weighs up to 30 kilos.
Finally, you can find accommodation in the villages, in the indigenous reserves or in the middle of the jungle. A good idea is to try an option in the jungle on the banks of the Amazon River.
Get vaccinated against yellow fever and dengue.
Bring insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
Have a swimsuit, in some places swimming is allowed.
Wear boots and raincoat.
Bring enough food and soft drinks.
Remember not to leave food or medicines in your room because of animals. Especially, if your hotel is in the middle of the jungle.
